GenTech Programming, Summer 2013
During a rigorous, 2-week bootcamp, students learn the fundamentals of entrepreneurship, acquire technical skills related to mobile app development, and explore myriad pathways to local careers in technology through experiential learning activities, guest speaker presentations, and field trips. In the second week of bootcamp, students will work in teams teams to begin developing a mobile app that seeks to “improve the quality of life for students in New York City.” Additionally, students will begin to learn how to code HTML, CSS, and JavaScript during the bootcamp.
After the bootcamp, students will attend full-day follow up classroom sessions on Wednesdays to further explore topics related to entrepreneurship and technology, continue to learn coding languages, and work with their team to build out their mobile app. On Tuesday and Thursday evenings, students will attend mentoring sessions in which they will receive support and guidance from a small, dedicated team of adult Tech Mentors, professionals from the tech sector. These mentoring sessions will be hosted by different tech companies throughout the city so that students can experience what it’s like to work in various professional environments.
